Abstract
This study explored the experiences and benefits of group singing for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Nineteen patients with PD participated in 24 singing sessions led by music therapists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants after program completion. The contents of interview were analyzed using qualitative content analysis method. A total of 7 categories, 14 subcategories, and 174 semantic units emerged. Participants experienced ¡®emotional ventilation (29.9%),¡¯ ¡®psychological stability (8.6%),' ¡®change in self-perception (14.4%),' ¡®increased free time (13.2%),' ¡®change in lifestyle (6.3%),' ¡®positive attitudes toward music (7.5%),' and ¡®active interactions among group members (20.1%).' The findings indicate that, in addition to supporting vocal skills, group singing can alleviate some of the physical, emotional, and psychosocial difficulties triggered by PD. Participants expressed having a more positive perspective on life, and motivating to use music as a leisure activity. This study provides a clinical rationale for further use of group singing for patients with PD.
